Dandruff is a common condition that appears on the scalp causing flakes of skin. Severe form of dandruff is called seborrhea dermatitis. In babies they call it cradle cap. When larger, greaser flakes occur it is called seborrhea dermatitis, it can form on the scalp or any other part of the body. The cause of seborrhea dermatitis and dandruff is not known. It is not believed the cause is due to poor hygiene. Dandruff may form if their hair is not combed or brushed regularly. Dandruff caused by dry skin gets small flakes on their scalp and the flakes are dry. People with psoriasis, eczema and other skin condition get dandruff more often. A fungus called malassezia lives on everyone’s scalp, this fungus can sometimes grow out of control; scalp gets irritated and creates extra skin cells. These skin cells mix with the oil on the scalp and causes dandruff, then they fall off. Over the Counter anti fungal, anti dandruff shampoos and scalp liquids are available on line and also in pharmacies. Active ingredients used to treat dandruff include Zinc Pyrithione, Selenium Sulphide, Coal Tar, Pine Tar, Ketoconazole, Salicylic Acid and Tea Tree Oil.
It is best to leave the shampoo on the scalp for at least 5 minutes before rinsing it off with water. If it is rinsed off too quickly, the ingredients will not have enough time to work on the dandruff.
